How to Create a Stylish and Functional Home Office

Working from home? Here are a few home office design ideas to create the ideal workspace you need.

If you’ve just started working from home temporarily or have been working remotely for a while, now’s the perfect time to create a workspace you’ll truly enjoy being in that will boost creativity and keep you productive. The last thing you want from your own workspace is to avoid it at all costs due to it looking dull and cluttered, then ending up working from your bed or family couch. We’ve gathered a few home office design ideas for you to prevent that from happening and to create the workspace you need and want! Here are some of the tips for a stylish and functional home office...

Pick a location in your home

Not surprising but true, the first and most vital decision in creating your workspace is deciding where you want to work in your home. It’s important to note that you should designate a specific area for your workspace, whether that be a corner of a room or an entire room dedicated solely to working. Make sure to pick a quiet space where you can see yourself focusing on your work tasks daily. This will keep you motivated and consistent in your working style and help promote productivity.

Make it comfortable

Once you’ve chosen a spot in your home to do your job, comfort is key! To start, a desk is an essential part to your workspace. If you don’t have one, you can always use your kitchen table! Next, you’re going to want a chair that provides support and comfort so you can avoid any back pain. You can either find an ergonomic chair or situate pillows on your seat for maximum comfort. If you can, place your laptop and monitors in a way that supports good posture and keep your pens, notes, and other work essentials within reach.

Finding what works best and is most comfortable for you will boost your productivity and keep you content while you work from home. If you want to go above and beyond, you can add a rug underneath your desk to bring in a fun color or pattern to your space.

Let light in

Having good lighting in your home office will not only prevent eye strain but improve your mood and you’ll get a bit of Vitamin D in the process. Try to situate yourself near a window so you can transition your eyes every now and again to avoid looking at a screen for hours at a time. If your space is still quite dark, you can add lighting with a floor or desk lamp. Another perk to choosing a workspace near a window is that it makes your space feel bigger. If your workspace is feeling small even with natural light, you can always add a large mirror in the room to reflect light and give the illusion of even more space.

Keep your area organized and clean

Having a home office that’s clutter-free will help you work more efficiently, especially if you have a small workspace. To keep your area tidy and clean, you’ll need to have storage space. If you already have drawers, files, and boxes, easily organize your work supplies in them. Otherwise, look at what work supplies you have and find what type of organization system works best for you. This could mean having a file sorter on your work desk or a cabinet beside it. If you have limited desk space, you can use the walls to hang up a calendar, a cork board/whiteboard to place notes on, or add shelving.

Add décor for personalization

Now comes the fun part, at least we’d like to think so! Decorating! You need a workspace that’s uplifting and inspiring to be in. For you, that could mean incorporating artwork, pictures, and motivational quotes, or it could be adding color to your space. You can easily add color through décor such as vases, books, and candles. If you really want to get into it, paint a wall of the room with the color of your choice. We recommend using Pantone’s Color of the Year, Classic Blue to add a refreshing and calming feel to the room. We also highly suggest bringing in plants to your workspace as they’re known to boost mood, productivity, reduce stress, and clean the air around you. Greenery provides a calming effect and looks stylish in your home too!
